Oran Film festival : WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? A tribute to lonely souls

In an age dominated by digital communication and social media, we are meant to feel more connected than ever. Yet, many find themselves isolated, living in personal bubbles that create distance from family and neighbors. This isolation can be a choice or a circumstance that individuals must navigate, whether temporarily or for a lifetime.

In Mohammad Gotta’s highly anticipated short drama, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? the theme of isolation is explored in a lighthearted, humorous, and intimate manner through the interactions of two neighbors who discover solace in one another after losing touch with the outside world.

The film features a natural and heartfelt performance by Lebanese actor Faris Al Bahri, a star from the Netflix hit series AL RAWABI SCHOOL FOR GIRLS, who portrays a young artist forced to leave his family home due to the social constraints placed upon him. After a conflict with his family regarding his pursuit of a music career — viewed as shameful in some Arab families — he decides to start anew in his own separate apartment.

One day, when he opens his apartment door, he is met by an elderly woman, played by veteran Jordanian voice actress Reem Saadeh — also well known for her role in AL RAWABI SCHOOL FOR GIRLS — wielding a broom, who mistakes him for a thief. He calmly reassures her of his identity as her new neighbor, leading to a delightful relationship filled with humorous encounters and endearing moments.

Despite their differences, the two develop an unlikely connection through their shared experiences of hardship and love of music.

The film emphasizes the importance of shared human experiences over differences, celebrates the beauty and strength of vulnerability, and encourages acceptance as a core aspect of humanity. It promotes the idea that everyone has the capacity to connect with others, fostering empathy and understanding.

Additionally, it sheds light on mental health issues, especially depression, calling for greater compassion and attention. Ultimately, it raises awareness about the importance of supporting the elderly and advocates for empathy and acceptance toward those facing personal challenges.

Written and directed by Mohammad Gotta, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?, which was supported by the Royal Film Commission-Jordan, I went to world premiere at the Oran International Arab Film Festival, which is running between October 4th and the 10th in Algeria.
